Dark Tide (2012)

July 11, 2011

A professional diver tutor Brady returns to deep waters after nine years following an almost fatal encounter with a great white shark, bringing a happy couple Kate and Jeff. However, before they know it they discover that the nightmare from the deep is still lurking in the deep, more carnivorous and hungry than ever.

This was my first feature film compositing gig at Pixomondo, starting at the end of 2010. It was a small team, with only 5 artists to build, texture, light, animate and composite the shots, all under the supervision of Ian Noe. Most of the work was on creating the CG shark that needed to be used when the actors had to directly interact with the creature. It also had to work in an edit that used footage shot on location with real sharks, so had to be indistinguishable from these. There were some interesting challenges, especially as the actors had nothing on set to use as a stand-in, but were required to physically touch and be attacked and maimed by the creature.
